Breasts matter – Breast implant truths, choice of technique and the importance of choosing a specialist breast surgeon

April 28, 2026

Across the ages breasts continue to symbolise femininity, fertility and reproduction in all shapes, sizes and forms. And within a society that communicates around the clock, accessing breast information – implants, surgical options, revision – is little more than a click of a button. Breast implants have endured their fair share of bad press – particularly in the last 10 years. Affirming that arming yourself, and your breasts, with reputable guidance and a trusted surgical hand, is more important than ever before. So, what are some of the home truths and key takeaways around breast implants – Da Vinci Plastic Surgery Clinic’s Dr Brandon Adams shares words from 2025’s ASAPS conference – and why does choosing a specialist breast surgeon matter most?

When it comes to breast enlargement and breast lifting (augmentation mastopexy) the implant and the surgical techniques used, are crucial to satisfactory and safe outcomes. Key focuses that were discussed at2025’s Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) conference in Syndey.

“Brad Calabrace from the USA highlighted trends in mastopexy augmentation, with the US now having access to Motiva implants. We have been using Motiva implants at Da Vinci Plastic Surgery Clinic for the last nine years,” explains Dr Brandon Adams. “There was support for single stage mastopexy augmentation, however it was recognised – that even in expert hands – breast aesthetic surgery sometimes needs revision. A focus on high-quality breast implants and stabilising the inframammary crease to deliver best outcomes, was supported by multiple presenters.”

The ASAPs masterclass reinforced the decision-making Da Vinci Plastic Surgery Clinic’s surgeons currently put into practise: using the highest quality implants available – Da Vinci Plastic Surgery Clinic use Motiva implants which are a new generation of implants and have not been associated with BIA-ALCL to date – and carefully listening to patients to ensure that outcomes match a desired look. This might be subtle enlargement, through to an obviously enhanced appearance. Choice of technique, implant location and careful surgery is essential to consistently good outcomes.

“Don’t believe all you read on the internet,” warns Dr Adam Bialostocki, Da Vinci Plastic Surgery Clinic's cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon, and specialist breast surgeon. “A face-to-face consultation with a specialist plastic surgeon will answer all those concerns. It isn’t really up to the patient to decide what needs to be done to achieve those results – the first step is to decide what outcome she desires,” explains Dr Bialostocki.

A skilled specialist plastic surgeon will then be able to make a recommendation as to what technique will reach those goals for example, this could be the option of implants with or without a lift, it may be lipo-filling/fat grafting, or it may be a combination – hybrid breast augmentation.

“A thorough pre-operative assessment needs to be performed to make sure that the surgery is safe for you and that you understand the risks and benefits as well as the time needed for recovery after the surgery as well as the follow up required,” adds Dr Bialostocki.

In New Zealand, a surgeon who bears RACs, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, qualifications (like Dr Adams and Dr Bialostocki) ensures patients receive the best in surgical standards, education and professionalism.

Alongside trusted implants, a specialist surgeon will also engage minimal scarring techniques alongside. Motiva MinimalScar® revolutionary technology enables Da Vinci Plastic Surgery Clinic surgeons to engage small incisions – 2.5 cm – around half the size of the current industry standard. And because Motiva Implants® are uniquely flexible and durable, they’re designed to mimic the look, feel, and movement of natural breast tissue.

The past decade years has spotlighted questions about breast implant safety as awareness of breast implant associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), breast implant illness (BII) has spread across mainstream and social media platforms. Increased breast implant awareness has resulted in greater demand from people, practitioners and industry providers across the globe to adhere to stricter monitoring of breast implant performance and quality of care.

Whilst New Zealand currently doesn’t have a breast implant registry, DaVinci Plastic Surgery Clinic patients can be assured of greater safety and monitoring via Motiva’s breast implant registry. It’s a simple and straightforward procedure to register your Motiva implants and you are guaranteed peace of mind.
