Base tans exposed

Base tans exposed

Many people are still under the illusion that a base tan, will protect them from sunburn. In order to achieve a base tan, you must expose your skin to the sun. Tanning of any sort comes about due to damage to the skin. Ultraviolet light causes damage to the skin and in response to that damage, the skin produces more melanin to try and protect the skin from more damage. The increased melanin production does reduce the chance of a subsequent sunburn but the skin has already been damaged in order to achieve that. Some skin cancers tend to occur more frequently in people who have frequent sunburns while others occur more commonly in people who are always tanned. The bottom line? Don't get sunburned, and if you really want to have a skin that appears tanned, there is a huge range of excellent tanning creams available.
